It brings out the color of your suit and adds more life to it. But not many of us know exactly how to fold a pocket square in any of the many ways it can be folded. Don’t worry! We got your back.

Here’s a full step-by-step guide to a few of the popular folding techniques for a pocket square.

One thing you need to be sure of is the pocket square should actually be a square. You can also work with a rectangle but it’ll require some extra folds. Square keeps it simple and easy.

The Presidential Fold

Now when you think about how to fold a pocket square, this one is probably the easiest out of all. With its crisp, clean look it symbolizes elegance and formality.

  • Begin with the pocket square flat on a clean surface.
  • Fold the square in half lengthwise.
  • Now fold upwards from the bottom of the folded square and leave an inch of fabric on the top.
  • Tuck the bottom side in your breast pocket.
  • Adjust as you need to so that you have a single line of cloth visible.

One more popular style is the Triangular or one tip-up fold. It looks great with solid color pocket squares.

  • Start with the pocket square laid out on a flat surface.
  • Grab one corner of the square and fold it.
  • You’ll have two overlapping triangles.
  • Fold one side of the triangle in and do the same on the other side.
  • Then place the pocket square in your pocket and snug it in.

This one is a more sophisticated version of the one tip-up fold.

  • Begging with the pocket square flat on a clean surface.
  • Grab one corner of the pocket square and fold it.
  • But keep the tip of the overlapping triangle, slightly off-center, so that the overlapping tip lies a little bit on the left of the tip underneath.
  • At the base, where the fold is, take one corner and fold it in. Do the same on the opposite side
  • Finally, take the pocket square and tuck it in your breast pocket.

You can place the two tips as close or as wide as you like.

This one is a bit tricky, but it shows everyone else in the room that you know how to fold a pocket square.

  • Start with the pocket square laid out on a flat surface.
  • Grab one corner of the pocket square and fold it.
  • But keep the tip of the overlapping triangle, slightly off-center, so that the overlapping tip lies a little bit on the left of the tip underneath.
  • At the base, where the fold is, grab the left corner and drag it all the way up to the other two tips. This one should lie slightly to the right of the center tip.
  • Fold the other corner at the base to match the width of your pocket.
  • Tuck the bottom of the pocket square down in your pocket, leaving only the three tips to show out of the pocket.

Or also known as the Four Tips Up Fold. This works best in a fabric that’s stiff.

  • Start with the pocket square laid out on a flat surface.
  • Grab one corner of the pocket square and fold it.
  • But keep the tip of the overlapping triangle, slightly off-center, so that the overlapping tip lies a little bit on the left of the tip underneath.
  • At the base, where the fold is, grab the left corner and drag it all the way up to the other two tips. This one should lie slightly to the right of the center tip.
  • Now take the other corner at the base and drag it diagonally all the way up to the other tips, and place it next to the leftmost tip.
  • Adjust the fabric to match your pocket size.
  • Tuck the fabric deep into your pocket so that only the four tips are visible.
